Matthew ha frequentato la Las Vegas Academy of Peforming Arts High School e per altri 4 anni la Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Performing and Visual Arts, per poi continuare gli studi all'Università californiana di Santa Cruz.
Due anni dopo si trasferisce a New York, si iscrive alla Tisch School of the Arts e si laurea nel 2002. Mentre a Manhattan, sfila per gli stilisti più famosi come Marc Jacobs, Burrberry, Louis Vuitton, Tommy Hilfiger e Sisley dove Barbara Pfister, una stilista di Vanity Fair e la popolare rivista lo contattano. Matthew fu contattato per un provino per una parte in "The Life Aquatic" e fu scritturato come 'Intern #1' (dopo chiamato Nico the Intern).
Nel 2003 Matthew è tornato a Las Vegas Academy per il 10° anniversario della scuola. Dal 2007 vive con il suo cane Mallory nell'appartamento di New York e in un altro appartamento a los Angeles durante le riprese della serie "Criminal Minds".

Matthew was born on March 9, 1980 and was raised in a quiet neighborhood near Bob Baskin Park in Las Vegas, Nevada to John Gubler who's an attorney and Marilyn Kelch Gubler a rancher, political consultant and a former chairwoman of the Nevada Republican Party. From the day he was born his parents knew he was a special child, as a teenager Matthew and attended the Las Vegas Academy of Peforming Arts High School followed by a four-year class at Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Performing and Visual Arts majoring in drama when he graduated from the Academy in 1998 he started studying at the University of California in Santa Cruz.
Two years later Matthew decided to leave California and moved to New York, he enrolled at Tisch School of the Arts and later graudated from that school in 2002. While in Manhattan he walked the runways for some of the biggest fashion designers such as Marc Jacobs, Burrberry, Louis Vuitton, Tommy Hilfiger and Sisley when Barbara Pfister whose a fashion designer for Vanity Fair and other popular fashion magazines disscovered him and later casted him for a "Royal Tenenbaums"-type family layout for Kate Spade which ran in fashion magazines including Vanity Fair in the fall that same year. Matthew was interning for Wes Anderson at the same time he did the modeling gig, Wes encouraged him to audition for a part in his movie "The Life Aquatic" he did and was casted as 'Intern #1' (later named Nico the Intern).
While Filming The Life Aquatic Matthew made the mini-documentary "Matthew Gray Gubler's Life Aquatic Intern Journal", which was a behind the scenes look of the movie and several amature critics claimed that documentary was better then the movie itself. In 2003 Matthew went back to his Alma mater, Las Vegas Academy for the schools 10th anniversary and spoke to the student assembly and as of 2007 he lives with his dog Mallory in his apartment in New York as well as another appartment in LA while he films episodes for the CBS Drama Criminal Minds in which he plays a character named Dr. Spencer Reid, who was a Las Vegas child prodigy but now a 20-something Genius working in the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU).

L'Agente Speciale Spencer Reid è incredibilmente brillante. Ha finito l'high school a 12 anni e ottenuto un triplo PhD all'età di 25 anni. Solitamente aiuta la squadra lavorando sulle statistiche e elaborando schemi complessi. E' in grado anche di analizzare la scrittura a mano.

Special Agent Spencer Reid is amazingly brilliant. He graduated high school at the age of 12 and acquired a triple PhD at the age of 25. He usually helps the team by working on statistics and spotting complex patterns. He also serves as the group's handwriting analyst.
